Fundraising Consultancy - Terms of Reference

The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) is built on the vision of a circular, responsible and just battery value chain in 2030. The GBA’s revenue model currently relies exclusively on membership fees. In order to ensure the Alliance's long-term sustainability and growth, the Alliance is actively looking to diversify its revenue streams. The GBA seeks the support of a fundraising consultant to develop and implement strategies to attract funding from external sources, including foundations, donors, and other financing institutions, while also exploring innovative fundraising mechanisms.

Objectives of the Consultancy

The primary objective of the consultancy is to help the GBA diversify its revenue base away from membership fees by attracting financial support from climate-focused foundations, philanthropic organisations, public organisations and/or impact investors, allowing the GBA to scale its activities and impact of flagship initiatives like the Battery Passport.

Scope of Work

The consultant will be responsible for providing strategic and practical support in fundraising and revenue diversification. The specific tasks and deliverables include:

a) Fundraising Strategy Development

  • Conduct an in-depth analysis of potential funding sources, including climate and other foundations, philanthropic organisations, public entities and/or impact investors, that align with the GBA’s goals and the broader sustainable battery ecosystem.
  • Develop a fundraising strategy that outlines specific goals, approaches, and target organisations for each funding source, with an emphasis on diversifying income beyond membership fees.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration with other organisations, coalitions, or partnerships that may facilitate additional funding streams.

b) Marketing Materials and Proposals

  • Develop tailored fundraising proposals, presentations, and marketing materials that clearly articulate the GBA's mission, the value of the Battery Passport, and the expected impact of specific projects.
  • Ensure that proposals align with the interests and priorities of potential funders and outline measurable outcomes.
  • Prepare documents that highlight the strategic and financial value of GBA initiatives for different donor categories, including foundations and governmental agencies.

c) Fundraising Outreach

  • Identify and establish initial contact with potential funders, including climate-focused foundations, international organisations, philanthropic entities, and impact investors.
  • Facilitate introductions to relevant funding contacts within the targeted institutions.
  • Work closely with the GBA’s leadership team to develop compelling case studies and narratives for donor engagement.

d) Proposals and Grant Applications

  • Write and submit proposals and grant applications to identified funding sources. This includes preparing budgets, defining key performance indicators (KPIs), and addressing funder requirements.
  • Provide ongoing support to ensure timely follow-up on submitted proposals and applications.

e) Monitoring and Reporting

  • Track progress on all fundraising activities and provide the GBA with regular reports, including key metrics such as outreach success, proposal submission rates, and funding received.
  • Provide recommendations to improve outreach or adjust strategies as needed based on the results of the initial fundraising efforts.

Deliverables

  • Fundraising Strategy Document – A detailed report outlining the targeted funders, approaches, and objectives.
  • Fundraising Materials – A set of marketing materials, including tailored proposals, PowerPoint presentations, and case studies.
  • Introductory Meetings and Connections – A list of meetings arranged with potential funders and contact information for key decision-makers.
  • Proposals and Grant Applications – At least three major funding proposals or grant applications submitted to identified funding sources.
  • Final Report – A brief summary report detailing activities undertaken, outcomes achieved, and strategic recommendations for future fundraising.
